GAS CARE CENTRAL HEATING LTD

THE COMPANY

Gas Care are specialists in the design and installation of central heating systems and employ 130 people in Caerphilly.

OUR INVOLVEMENT IN CONSTRUCT WALES

As one of the largest suppliers to the social housing sector in Wales, Gas Care sought ways to work more effectively with major clients such as Valleys to Coast in Bridgend, with the aim of becoming the ''best in Wales''.

WHAT WE`VE ACHIEVED

The focus of the project has been to identify best practice in central heating installation. The picture of an "ideal installation" comprises 2 engineers and an apprentice installing a system of a combi boiler and 5 radiators in one-day.

Firstly a pattern or template of an ideal installation was reviewed. Then the process was mapped with details of each activity undertaken, the sequence of events and who does what clearly noted. The final stage has been the production of a video of the ideal installation. This will be used in the company''s training centre to demonstrate the exact sequence of activity to produce the most effective and efficient method of working.

"IDENTIFYING BEST PRACTICE IMPROVES EFFICIENCY"

Construct Wales aims to improve the performance and competitiveness of 850 SMEs in the construction industry over the 3-year project. Businesses will be shown how to develop plans for future growth and improvement through a range of support, advice and training.

THE BENEFITS

"Having identified the ideal installation, we can now use the video to train all our workforce to mirror this method of working," explains Roy Colman, Business Development Manager for Gas Care. "This means we can cut down on problems encountered during an installation, and our customers are happy because we are completing the jobs in a consistent way."

"There have also been significant cost savings, both for the customer, as we know how long the job will take, and for ourselves as we are no longer wasting materials. We estimate cost savings of £100 per installation."

"Most importantly, with substantial forward orders, we have been able to take on more people and contribute to the local economy."
